If you own a boat or rent an offshore fishing boat in Marathon key, you can enjoy one of the world’s most desirable deep sea fishing attractions. There are thousands of species to target around the islands and underwater structures, reefs of the Florida Keys. The weather is always on your side since the temperatures are always warm. You can be around 600-800 feet deep water in less than 30 minutes from dock to the fishing spot.
There are several offshore fishing spots which are known to produce results such as Marathon Hump. This is a great underwater mountain which is known for its Blackfin Tuna. You are competing with sharks when you are fishing for Tuna but it is still a great experience for anglers of any age.
Marathon Hump is approximately 23 miles offshore from Rent Dock Space where you park your boat. As soon as you leave the marina area, you should head southeast to get to the Hump. On your way out, you can look for some weed lines to locate Mahi Mahi (or known as Dolphin fish) which is a great fiesta. Same applies to Mangrove Snapper that you can look for at the nearby reefs.
What if you do not own a boat?
You can always rent one. There are many boat rental businesses around Marathon Key. They offer daily or weekly rentals with variety of different kinds and sizes. When you rent an offshore boat, you should rent something over 24 ft with ideally twin engines. You will be going after pelagic fish such as Mahi Mahi, BlackfinTuna, Marlin or Sailfish.
The offshore fishing season is year around in the Keys. The secret is to fish with live bait. You can catch live bait directly off your dock. At Rent Dock Space, we have underwater lights which attracts bait fish at night. If you wake up before the first light, you can either use a cast net or a sabiki rig to catch your bait for the day, directly off the dock.
Between Fall and Winter, live bait are also close to the shore. Fall and winter fishing in the Keys are considered best times since you do not have to track far out to catch great eating fish.
You can also troll live or dead bait, along with artificial lures around the reefs to target King fish and Bonitas.
Wahoo, Cobia and other species are in abundance around Fall and Winter.
You can also target good size fish around the ship wrecks. You need to setup for bottom fishing and within minutes to your dock, you are at 400ft water with a wreck site which holds great fish.
For bottom fishing the wreck sites, you can use cut bait of Squid or Bellyhoo. You can catch Amberjacks or Groupers.
Bottom fishing also yields hooking giant sharks sometimes. They are not fun to reel but certainly a good fight.
Sombrero beach area (which is about 5 minutes to the Rent Dock Space location), can provide a great deal of Pompano which is an amazing eating fish.
